Where it came from
Serra Angel first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a quintessential example of the White color philosophy. It was conceived as a balanced, high-impact creature that combined offensive capabilities with defensive utility through its vigilance ability. The card quickly became a staple of the game, serving as a reliable late-game finisher that defined the power level for flying creatures in early formats.
The art for the Revised Edition printing of Serra Angel was created by Douglas Shuler. Shuler’s depiction of the angel, characterized by ethereal wings and a serene posture, established the visual archetype for angels in the franchise. Upon its release, the card was widely received as one of the most iconic and recognizable pieces of artwork in the game's history, securing its status as a foundational element of the hobby for decades.
