Where it came from
The Serra Angel was released as part of the 1996 Pro Tour Collector Set, a commemorative boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the inaugural Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. These cards were designed as non-tournament legal replicas of iconic cards from the game's earliest sets, specifically aimed at collectors who wanted to own pieces of the game's history that had become prohibitively expensive or rare by the mid-nineties.
The original art for Serra Angel was created by Douglas Shuler, whose work defined the aesthetic of the early game with a classic, high-fantasy style. Shuler’s depiction of the angel—serene, powerful, and iconic—became one of the most recognizable images in trading card history. The Pro Tour Collector version maintained this visual legacy while featuring distinct gold-bordered backs, ensuring they remained distinct from standard game-play cards and preserving the integrity of the secondary market for the original Alpha and Beta printings.
