Serra Angel

The Serra Angel was released as part of the 30th Anniversary History Promos, a special collection distributed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate three decades of Magic: The Gathering. As one of the game's most iconic creatures, the Serra Angel was chosen to represent the early years of the card game, serving as a nostalgic centerpiece that highlights the transition from the Alpha set to modern play. This specific printing features the original art by Douglas Shuler, which has remained a hallmark of the game's visual identity since its debut in 1993.

The design of the 30th Anniversary edition aims to preserve the classic aesthetic while providing a high-quality commemorative piece for long-time collectors. The original illustration was intended to depict an angelic guardian embodying hope and strength, a vision that resonated deeply with early players and helped define the White color identity in Magic. Its reception has been largely favorable among the community, who view these promotional prints as a respectful homage to the cards that established the game's foundation during its inception in the early 1990s.
