Shivan Reef

Shivan Reef was originally printed in the 1995 expansion set Apocalypse, serving as part of a cycle of allied-color pain lands that define a specific era of Magic: The Gathering utility lands. Designed to provide mana flexibility at the cost of life, these lands became staples of competitive play for their ability to facilitate aggressive multi-colored deck strategies. The card was eventually included in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters to introduce players to classic cards throughout the history of the game.

The original illustration for this version of the card was rendered by artist Rob Alexander, whose work is synonymous with the visual identity of Magic's early landscape art. Alexander utilized a distinct painterly style to evoke the harsh, volatile geography of a volcanic reef, aiming to communicate the card's dual nature of providing resources while inflicting damage. Upon its initial release, the design was well-received for its clear mechanical utility and its atmospheric contribution to the game’s world-building.
