Shivan Reef

Shivan Reef was originally released as part of the Apocalypse expansion in 2001, designed to provide players with a utility land capable of producing either blue or red mana. The card belongs to a cycle of 'pain lands' that require players to pay one life to access colored mana, a mechanic that balances versatility with a tangible cost during gameplay. This specific iteration hails from the 2002 World Championship Decks, a product line featuring gold-bordered, non-tournament-legal reprints of decks piloted by top competitors at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships.

The artwork for this version retains the original illustration by Donato Giancola, which depicts a desolate, crystalline landscape that captures the volatile essence of a dual-mana source. The World Championship Deck series was intended to allow casual players to experience the high-level strategies employed by professionals during the 2001-2002 tournament season. While the cards themselves were excluded from sanctioned play due to their unique card backs and gold borders, they have since become valued as historical artifacts documenting the evolution of competitive play.
