Shivan Reef

Shivan Reef was originally introduced in the 1995 expansion set Ice Age, designed as part of a cycle of allied-colored pain lands. These lands established a foundational mechanic in Magic: The Gathering by allowing players to tap for colorless mana or pay one life to access one of two colored mana sources, effectively balancing aggressive deck speeds against long-term resource costs. The version released in Magic Origins in 2015 served as a functional reprint, reintegrating the classic card into a core set designed to bridge the gap between legacy mechanics and modern gameplay structures.

The Magic Origins illustration was provided by Rob Alexander, a prolific artist who has contributed to the game since its early years. Alexander is widely recognized for his mastery of landscape painting, and his approach to the Shivan Reef emphasizes the geothermal volatility and harsh, crystalline beauty of the location.
