Shivan Reef

Shivan Reef was first printed in the 2001 Magic: The Gathering set Apocalypse, the final chapter of the Invasion block. Designed as part of a cycle of allied-colored pain lands, the card was created to provide players with efficient mana fixing, allowing them to tap the land for either blue or red mana at the cost of one life. This mechanic reflected the set's theme of warring factions and unstable, volatile landscapes, offering a tactical risk-versus-reward element that became a staple of competitive play.

The art for this iteration was commissioned from Rob Alexander, a prolific landscape illustrator for the game known for his evocative, painterly style. Alexander’s vision for the Shivan Reef captured the harsh, geothermal environment of the Shivan region, balancing the vibrant blue of the mana pools against the jagged, fiery crags of the terrain.
