Where it came from
The Snake token, numbered 23 in the Amonkhet set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Tokens in this set were designed to represent summoned creatures created by various spells and abilities throughout the game, specifically serving as a visual aid for players whose cards generate 1/1 green Snake creature tokens. The art was commissioned to fit the Egyptian-inspired aesthetic of the Amonkhet plane, featuring a slithering, stylized serpent consistent with the set's desert theme.
The artwork for this specific token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time illustrator for the franchise known for his dark and atmospheric style. Staples aimed to capture the predatory and swift nature of the creatures inhabiting the plane, utilizing the vibrant color palette characteristic of the set's environment. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed in booster packs, serving as a functional tool for gameplay mechanics rather than a collectible piece, though it remains a recognizable element of the expansion's thematic identity.
