Where it came from
The Snake token, numbered 10 in the Zendikar expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 2009, serves as a functional game piece for Magic: The Gathering. During the Zendikar block, Wizards of the Coast introduced dedicated token cards to represent creatures created by spells and abilities, replacing the previous practice of using makeshift markers. This specific token was designed to represent the 1/1 green Snake creatures produced by cards like Sosuke’s Summons or various spells featuring the landfall mechanic.
The artwork for this token was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the creature with a visceral, naturalistic aesthetic consistent with the wild, adventure-focused theme of the Zendikar plane. The illustration emphasizes the serpent's reptilian textures and defensive posture, grounding the card in the game's broader lore of untamed landscapes. Upon its release, it became a standard utility card that players relied upon to maintain board state clarity during matches.
