Sol Ring

The Sol Ring, first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, has become the quintessential staple of the Commander format. In 2022, Wizards of the Coast expanded the game's reach through a collaboration with Games Workshop, releasing the Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks. This specific iteration was designed to integrate the utilitarian power of the card into the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic of the 41st millennium, serving as a functional piece of cardboard history recontextualized within a new intellectual property.

Artist Kekai Kotaki was commissioned to illustrate this version, focusing on the iconic, industrial, and relic-heavy visual language typical of Warhammer 40,000 lore. Kotaki sought to evoke a sense of ancient, machine-god technology, moving away from the classic geometric ring design to reflect the gothic, ornate machinery of the Imperium of Man. The card was received positively by both Magic players and Warhammer enthusiasts, celebrated for successfully bridging two distinct tabletop subcultures while maintaining the essential identity of an artifact that generates immense resources.
