Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) Sol Ring was released in 1993 as part of a standalone set intended for the European market. Designed as a non-tournament legal showcase of the original Magic: The Gathering base set, these cards were created to provide players access to rare staples that were rapidly becoming difficult to obtain. The cards are easily distinguished from standard releases by their square corners and a gold-ink stamp on the reverse side.

The Sol Ring itself is one of the most iconic artifacts in the game, illustrated by Mark Tedin. Tedin’s design was intended to evoke a sense of ancient, magical power, utilizing a stark, minimalist aesthetic that contrasted with the more elaborate art of other contemporary artifacts. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized for its immense utility in gameplay, cementing its status as a foundational element of the game’s meta-strategy that persists to this day.
