Soldier

The Soldier card originates from the Doctor Who Tokens set, a collectible series produced in the mid-1970s to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the BBC science fiction television series. During this era, Doctor Who merchandise began to expand significantly, reflecting the show's transition from a cult television staple into a broader cultural phenomenon. The tokens were intended as low-cost, portable keepsakes for younger fans, often distributed through vending machines or as small parlor game components.

The design of the Soldier token reflects the aesthetic of the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker eras, characterized by a utilitarian, graphic approach typical of promotional materials from the period. While the specific illustrator remains uncredited, the design aimed to capture the military aesthetic of the various terrestrial and alien forces frequently encountered by the Doctor. It was received as a modest piece of ephemeral memorabilia, serving as a functional item for children's tabletop play rather than as a high-end display piece.
