Where it came from
The Soldier token was released as part of the 2002 Magic Player Rewards program, a loyalty initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to encourage participation in sanctioned tournaments. During this period, the program distributed promotional cards and tokens to active players, serving as a tangible reward for consistent engagement with the game. This particular token was crafted to support card effects from the Onslaught block, which saw a significant resurgence in tribal mechanics and token-based strategies.
The art for this token was executed by Greg Staples, who was a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering throughout the early 2000s. Staples aimed for a gritty, functional aesthetic that aligned with the high-fantasy military themes of the era's set designs. The piece was well-received for its clear visual language, providing players with a distinct and uniform token that became a staple for deck-building during that competitive season.
