Soldier

The Soldier token was introduced as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. Designed to function as a visual reference for gameplay mechanics within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, these tokens were created to support the specific strategic needs of the Imperium of Man deck. The aesthetic direction sought to translate the grim, industrial military iconography of the 41st millennium into the standardized format of a trading card game, utilizing established Warhammer 40,000 art assets to maintain visual consistency with the tabletop wargame.

The design of this series reflects a collaborative effort between Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast, aiming to bridge the gap between their respective fanbases. By adopting a distinct border and art treatment, the token was crafted to be immediately recognizable on the battlefield while honoring the lore-heavy origins of the source material. Upon release, the set was well-received by players for its attention to detail and ability to integrate thematic elements from the Warhammer universe into the competitive and casual play environments of Magic.
