Where it came from
The Soldier token was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2022. Designed to facilitate gameplay for decks featuring the Imperium of Man, these tokens serve as visual placeholders for the basic infantry units generated by various cards within the set. The set was created through a collaboration between Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast, intended to blend the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium with the mechanics of a collectible card game.
The artistic direction for these tokens draws heavily from the established visual language of the Astra Militarum, the primary fighting force of the Imperium. The illustrations prioritize a utilitarian, industrial look consistent with Imperial Guard aesthetics, utilizing muted tones and heavy armor designs that reflect the brutal nature of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. These tokens were well-received by players for providing thematic clarity and maintaining immersion during matches where token generation is frequent.
