Where it came from
The Squid token was released in 2022 as part of the 'Streets of New Capenna' Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to represent the specific creature type generated by the card 'Sewer Crocodile' and other associated effects within the set's crime-noir and art-deco aesthetic. Tokens in this series were produced to provide players with physical, thematic representations of auxiliary creatures on the battlefield.
The illustration was created by artist Randy Vargas, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style consistent with the urban, industrial themes of New Capenna. His design focuses on the uncanny, tentacled nature of the creature, fitting into the set's broader visual identity that blends 1920s-inspired fashion with fantastical, monstrous elements. The token was received as a functional and stylistically cohesive addition to the commander decks of that release period.
