Where it came from
Strike It Rich was introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. As part of the Timeshifted subset, the card features a retro-frame design that pays homage to the aesthetics of early Magic: The Gathering sets from the mid-1990s. This design choice was intended to appeal to nostalgia, providing players with modern, mechanically current cards presented in the iconic layout that defined the game's formative years.
The card was illustrated by Dave Rapoza, who captured the high-stakes, greedy atmosphere of a gold rush prospector discovering a vein of wealth. The artwork reinforces the card's function as a temporary mana boost, reflecting the frantic, opportunistic nature of its namesake. Upon its release, the card saw immediate play in competitive formats like Modern and Pauper, where its ability to smooth mana curves and enable early-game plays cemented its reputation as a versatile and efficient utility spell.
