Where it came from
The Sunglasses of Urza originated in the 1994 Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce the ability for players to see face-down cards. The card represents a powerful artifact from the lore of the multiverse, referencing the legendary artificer Urza. Its design, featuring an intricate and slightly surreal illustration by Dan Frazier, captures the mystical aesthetic typical of the game's early artifacts.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a premium, non-tournament-legal commemorative reprint of the original Alpha cards. This version features the classic art style updated with a modern card frame and a commemorative back, intended to celebrate the history of the game. It was received as a nostalgic collector’s item, appealing to long-term fans who appreciate the aesthetic legacy of the original 1994 release.
