Where it came from
Sunglasses of Urza originated in the Summer Magic set, also known as the Edgar set, which was printed in 1994 as a limited replacement for the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. This set is infamous among collectors for its history of production errors and its scarcity, as the vast majority of the print run was destroyed due to significant quality control issues, such as color misprints and misspellings.
The card illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose work defined the aesthetic of the game's earliest artifacts. The design features the iconic artifacts of the character Urza, depicting them as functional relics within the game's lore. While the card itself saw limited competitive play, it remains a centerpiece for enthusiasts of the game's early history due to the unique rarity of the Summer Magic printing, which serves as a tactile marker of the transition between the game's experimental infancy and its professional evolution.
