Where it came from
Sunglasses of Urza debuted in Limited Edition Alpha in 1993, representing one of the earliest artifacts in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed during a period when the game's mechanics were still being solidified by Richard Garfield and the team at Wizards of the Coast, serving as a thematic nod to the lore of Urza, a central figure in the game's unfolding narrative.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Dan Frazier, who contributed significantly to the aesthetic of the early sets with his distinctive, painterly style. While the card is often cited for its niche utility in allowing players to see their opponents' hands, its legacy is primarily rooted in its status as a piece of foundational Magic history, capturing the experimental design philosophy of the game's inception.
