Where it came from
Scrubland originated in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. As one of the original ten dual lands, it was designed by Richard Garfield to provide players with flexible mana sources, specifically tapping for either white or green mana. The card was created to serve as a cornerstone for deck-building, allowing for greater consistency in early competitive play.
The artwork for the card was provided by Sandra Everingham, who illustrated several pieces for the foundational sets of the game. Her contribution features an evocative, painterly landscape that captures the essence of the dual-color identity. Upon release, the set was received with curiosity by gaming enthusiasts, and while the initial print run was relatively modest, these lands quickly became essential staples due to their mechanical efficiency and utility in diverse deck archetypes.
