Swamp

The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to experience the exact card lists used by the top eight finalists at the 2001 Magic: The Gathering World Championship in Toronto. Unlike standard booster pack cards, these were printed with gold-bordered backs and signatures of the players on the face of the cards, rendering them ineligible for tournament play. The Swamp itself represents a basic land card from the 'Deadande' deck, piloted by Dutch player Tom van de Logt, who ultimately won the tournament.

This specific iteration of the Swamp features the artwork of Rob Alexander, a prolific illustrator who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Alexander’s landscapes are celebrated for their evocative use of lighting and depth, defining the visual identity of the game’s basic lands during the Invasion block era. In the context of the World Championship series, these cards serve as archival artifacts that preserve the competitive meta-game and design sensibilities of the early 2000s.
