Swamp

The Swamp card from the 1995 Magic: The Gathering set Ice Age was created during a pivotal era for the game, marking its transition from a localized hobby to a global phenomenon. As a basic land, it served as the foundational resource for black-aligned decks, reflecting the set's thematic shift toward a frozen, post-apocalyptic landscape known as Terisiare. The expansion was designed to introduce new mechanics and a more cohesive aesthetic, providing a dark, gothic tone that contrasted with the more traditional high fantasy of earlier releases.

The artwork for this particular Swamp was crafted by Quinton Hoover, a prominent illustrator whose contributions helped define the early visual language of the game. Hoover sought to evoke a sense of desolate, icy stagnation, utilizing his signature expressive style to render the bleak, frozen marshland. His interpretation was well-received by players for its ability to convey a cold, brooding atmosphere, solidifying the card as a quintessential piece of Magic: The Gathering history that remains recognizable for its distinct, evocative aesthetic.
