Swamp

The Swamp card numbered 261 from the 2015 Battle for Zendikar set was designed as part of a cycle of full-art basic lands intended to evoke the return to the iconic, dangerous plane of Zendikar. Following the original 2009 Zendikar block, which popularized full-art lands among players, Wizards of the Coast sought to capture the otherworldly, adventurous atmosphere of the setting. These lands were illustrated to showcase the dramatic, shifting topography of the plane, emphasizing the sense of exploration that defined the set’s narrative.

The illustration for this specific Swamp is credited to Adam Paquette, who utilized a sweeping, painterly style to convey the eerie, bioluminescent quality of the Zendikar wetlands. By removing the traditional text box frame, the design allows the landscape art to dominate the card, a stylistic choice that became highly sought after by collectors for its aesthetic appeal. Upon its release, the card was widely praised for its immersive visual storytelling, reinforcing the set's focus on the wild, untamed nature of the environment.
