Provenance

Where it came from

Swords to Plowshares was originally released in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to embody the game's early mechanical philosophy of high-impact white removal. The card represents a classic balance between utility and flavor, allowing a player to exile a creature in exchange for gaining life equal to its power. This specific iteration, numbered 84 in the Battle Royale Box Set released in 1999, served to reprint iconic cards from the game's formative years, providing newer players access to essential staples that had become increasingly difficult to acquire.

The artwork for this version was rendered by Jeff A. Menges, whose contributions to early Magic defined much of the game's initial visual identity. Menges focused on a classical, allegorical depiction of the card's namesake, moving away from high-fantasy combat to highlight the theme of peace and transformation. Upon its debut, the card was immediately recognized for its efficiency, and it remains one of the most frequently played white cards in the game's history due to its clean, unconditional removal effect.
