Where it came from
Swords to Plowshares was originally released in 1993 as part of the Alpha set for the Magic: The Gathering card game. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card became an immediate staple of white control decks due to its efficiency in exiling creatures. The specific Secret Lair version, numbered 1627, was released as part of a series intended to offer stylized, alternative artistic interpretations for established players who value unique aesthetics in their decks.
This particular iteration of the card features illustration by an artist selected to lean into the ethereal and symbolic nature of the spell. The Secret Lair initiative was established by Wizards of the Coast to provide curated, thematic collections that cater to adult collectors and long-term fans. By commissioning distinct artistic styles, the series aims to transform functional gameplay components into miniature galleries, reflecting the evolving visual identity of the game over its multi-decade history.
