Where it came from
Swords to Plowshares was originally released in 1993 as part of the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. The card quickly became a foundational staple of the white color identity, celebrated for its efficiency as a low-cost removal spell. The artwork, famously created by Jeff A. Menges, depicts a scene of peaceful transition, perfectly capturing the flavor of the card's effect where a creature is exiled in exchange for its controller gaining life.
The 30th Anniversary Edition version of this card, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative reprint intended to honor the game's long history. While maintaining the original artistic essence established by Menges, this edition was produced as a non-tournament-legal collectible meant to celebrate the aesthetic legacy of early Magic sets. It reflects the enduring popularity of the original design, which remains one of the most iconic and frequently played removal spells in the game's history.
