Provenance

Where it came from

Swords to Plowshares was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed as a highly efficient white removal spell that trades an opponent's creature for a boost to their life total. It has remained a cornerstone of the game's balance for decades, frequently cited as one of the most powerful removal options ever printed due to its low mana cost and exile effect.

This specific iteration, numbered 32 in the Eternal Masters set released in 2016, features new artwork by Magali Villeneuve. The illustration was commissioned to provide a fresh, modern aesthetic for the card while staying true to its original thematic concept of non-violent resolution, and it was generally well-received by the community for its cleaner, more evocative depiction of the spell's core effect.
