Where it came from
Tamiyo's Journal was released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadows over Innistrad. The artifact card reflects the overarching narrative of the set, which depicts the planeswalker Tamiyo investigating the corruption and madness spreading across the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. Mechanically, the card was designed to represent the act of investigation, utilizing the set's signature 'Investigate' keyword to generate clue tokens.
The card's art was created by illustrator Eric Deschamps, who captured the artifact as an ancient, weathered tome bound in leather, echoing the mysterious and intellectual nature of Tamiyo’s character. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful utility piece for midrange and control decks, valued by players for its ability to provide steady card advantage while fitting seamlessly into the investigation-themed gameplay introduced in this specific block.
