Where it came from
Tamiyo's Journal was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative, it serves as a central artifact documenting the planeswalker Tamiyo's research into the supernatural horrors consuming the plane of Innistrad, specifically tracking the mysterious influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card was designed as an artifact that rewards players for investigating, mechanically representing the act of gathering clues to piece together a larger mystery.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on depicting a leather-bound tome pulsating with otherworldly, magical energy to reflect the journal's importance in the story. It was well received by players for its flavor-rich design, which successfully integrated the set's new 'Investigate' mechanic into a repeatable card-draw engine. The item remains a significant piece of lore for players interested in the cosmic horror arc of the Innistrad plane.
