Where it came from
Tamiyo's Journal was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative, it serves as a central artifact belonging to the moonfolk planeswalker Tamiyo, who used it to document the maddening transformations occurring across the plane of Innistrad. The design features a distinct, weathered aesthetic meant to evoke the feeling of a researcher's field notes, reflecting the set's gothic horror themes.
The card illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the arcane and investigative nature of the object. Its game mechanics, which allow players to investigate and search their library, were designed to reward players for uncovering mysteries, effectively tying the card's function to its thematic identity as an essential tool for an investigator.
