Where it came from
Tamiyo's Journal was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative, it serves as a central artifact belonging to the moonfolk planeswalker Tamiyo, who used it to document the unraveling madness on the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. The card was designed to mechanically represent the process of investigation and unraveling mystery through its ability to produce clue tokens.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Willian Murai, who leaned into the dark, arcane aesthetic established for the set. It features a weathered, mystical ledger that reflects the scholarly nature of its owner. Upon its release, the card became a notable inclusion in artifact-focused decks due to its card-advantage utility and its thematic resonance with the set's central 'investigate' mechanic.
