Provenance

Where it came from

Tsabo's Web was originally released in the 2000 Invasion expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield and his team to combat the heavy reliance on non-basic lands in competitive play. The card is named after the Phyrexians' field commander, Tsabo Tavoc, reflecting the lore of the set where the mechanical Phyrexian forces invaded the plane of Dominaria. Its primary function as an artifact is to punish players for utilizing utility lands, creating a tactical bottleneck in deck construction.

The 2001 World Championship Decks were pre-constructed replicas of the decks used by top-tier players during the 2001 Magic World Championships. These versions were printed with gold borders and special backs, intended as commemorative items rather than tournament-legal cards. Carl Critchlow, the artist behind the illustration, utilized his signature detailed, often grotesque style to capture the unsettling, organic-mechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexians, portraying the Web as a constrictive, entrapping force.
