Where it came from
The Spirits front card was released as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for Magic: The Gathering, an expansion designed specifically for a pick-up-and-play format that removes the need for traditional deck construction. Each pack in this set is built around a specific theme, and these front cards serve as thematic signposts, displaying the name and identity of the deck contained within the booster.
The aesthetic of the Jumpstart 2022 series was notable for its shift toward anime-inspired illustrations, a departure from the game's traditional high-fantasy art style. This specific card, featuring a haunting, ethereal depiction of spirits, was designed to signal a tempo-oriented playstyle focused on evasion and synergy, reflecting the broader creative direction to merge modern Japanese animation sensibilities with the established mechanical foundations of Magic.
