Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the 1993 Collectors' Edition was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a non-tournament-legal reprint of cards originally featured in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering. Released as a boxed set, it was intended to allow players access to rare and iconic cards that had become prohibitively expensive or scarce on the secondary market shortly after the game's initial launch.

The card features the classic artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific early artists for the game. His depiction of the island was designed to evoke a tranquil, isolated landscape, serving as a foundational aesthetic element for the blue mana resource. The set is visually distinguished from original printings by its gold-bordered back, which ensured that the cards remained identifiable as collectibles rather than gameplay-legal components.
