Where it came from
The Web card, originally appearing in the core sets of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1993, represents an early example of the game's creature-enchantment design. It was created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast to address the need for defensive mechanics against flying creatures, a common tactical challenge in the game's initial release. The card belongs to the broader design philosophy of the Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited sets, which prioritized high-fantasy archetypes and intuitive, if sometimes restrictive, gameplay interactions.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative printing of these foundational cards. While the artwork for Web was originally illustrated by Quinton Hoover, known for his distinct, expressive style that defined much of the early game's aesthetic, this edition reproduces that classic imagery on a modern, non-tournament-legal card stock. The set was designed to honor the history of Magic: The Gathering for collectors, providing a high-quality iteration of cards that have shaped the hobby for three decades.
