Provenance

Where it came from

Web was released in 1997 as part of the Unlimited Edition of the original Pokémon Trading Card Game, a set that served as a specialized expansion for the Japanese market. Created by Media Factory, this set sought to compile popular illustrations from previous releases and promotional materials, making high-demand cards more accessible to a broader audience during the height of the game's initial popularity.

The card features artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, a foundational illustrator for the early TCG era whose style is characterized by a distinctive, textured approach often reminiscent of mixed media or digital collage. While Web was a staple utility card during its time, its aesthetic legacy is tied to the unique design sensibilities of the late 90s, when the card game was establishing its visual identity through varied artistic interpretations of the series' creatures and items.
