Where it came from
Balance was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993 for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. The card was created to serve as a powerful equalizer, intended to reset the game state when one player had gained a significant advantage in resources. Its design philosophy centered on bringing symmetry to a competitive environment, forcing both players to discard cards and sacrifice lands and creatures until they reached parity.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative printing of iconic cards from the game's earliest history. While these cards feature the classic illustrations—in this case by Christopher Rush—they are distinguished by a commemorative card back that differentiates them from the original 1993 printings. The 30th Anniversary set was designed to honor the game's long-standing legacy, and Balance was selected for inclusion due to its status as one of the most mechanically influential and historically significant cards from the game's formative years.
