Island

The Island card from the Unlimited Edition, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, serves as a fundamental component of the early Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As the second core set produced, Unlimited was designed to refine the mechanics and distribution of the game following the rapid depletion of the limited-run Alpha and Beta sets. These basic lands were printed in a white-bordered format to clearly distinguish them from the rare, black-bordered initial printings, ensuring the game remained accessible to a growing player base.

The artwork for this specific Island was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential artists in the game's formative years. Rush sought to capture the ethereal and mystical essence of the game's setting, utilizing a distinct painterly style that defined the visual identity of Magic's early era. While basic lands were ubiquitous and often undervalued at the time, this particular illustration remains a celebrated piece of gaming history, frequently praised by long-term collectors for its classic aesthetic and the significant role Rush played in establishing the game's iconic look.
