Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Pro Tour Collector Set, designated as collector number shr367, was released in 1997 as part of a specialized boxed set intended to commemorate the top-performing decks from the 1996 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These sets were designed to offer players a way to own the exact card lists used by the most successful competitors, featuring gold-bordered backs and signatures on the front to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards.

The artistic direction for this particular card utilizes the iconic, sweeping landscape aesthetic characteristic of early Magic: The Gathering expansions. While these sets were initially met with some confusion by players due to their inability to be used in sanctioned tournament play, they have since become valued by collectors for their historical snapshot of competitive play during the mid-nineties and the unique visual presentation of the gold-stamped borders.
