Wood Elves

Wood Elves was originally printed as a common creature card in the 1997 Portal set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce new players to the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. As part of a simplified base set, the card was intended to provide a straightforward, efficient utility creature that allowed players to search their library for a Forest card and put it onto the battlefield, reinforcing the core green color philosophy of mana ramp and land acceleration.

The art was commissioned from Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, ethereal watercolor style became a hallmark of late 1990s and early 2000s Magic illustration. While the card was later included in The List—a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's history that appear in Set Boosters—its inclusion maintains the classic design aesthetic of the era. The card has long been lauded by the community for its mechanical efficiency and Guay's evocative, soft-focus depiction of woodland guardians, cementing its status as a staple in various green-based deck archetypes.
