Where it came from
The Wood Elves card originates from the Duel Decks: Nissa vs. Ob Nixilis set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2015. This product was designed to showcase the thematic rivalry between the green-aligned Planeswalker Nissa Revane and the black-aligned Demon Planeswalker Ob Nixilis, providing players with two pre-constructed decks optimized for head-to-head play. The inclusion of Wood Elves, a classic card originally dating back to the game's earliest sets, served as a foundational support piece for Nissa’s deck, emphasizing the green mana-ramp strategy central to her character identity.
The illustration for this iteration of Wood Elves was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. Known for his atmospheric and detailed fantasy style, Kieryluk was tasked with refreshing the aesthetic of this staple creature to fit the modern visual language of the game. His design focuses on the ethereal, forest-dwelling nature of the elf, utilizing a lush color palette that reinforces the creature's connection to the forest land type. Upon release, the set was well-received by players for its balance and the inclusion of popular reprints, cementing the card's role as a functional and iconic piece of the deck's mechanics.
