Where it came from
Wood Elves was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's foundational green mana ramp mechanics. As a creature that searches for a forest card and puts it onto the battlefield, it became a staple utility card. The Ninth Edition version, released in 2005, marked a period where the game was focusing on core set reprints to maintain accessibility for new players while balancing the environment for established collectors.
The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was created by artist Christopher Rush. Known for his iconic work on some of the game's earliest and most valuable cards, Rush approached this illustration with a classic fantasy sensibility. His interpretation of the Wood Elves emphasized their harmony with the forest landscape, utilizing a traditional painterly style that became a hallmark of the game's aesthetic during its mid-2000s era.
