Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) Island was released in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set designed for the European market. It was essentially a reprinting of the limited-edition Alpha and Beta cards, intended to provide collectors with access to cards that were already becoming difficult to acquire. These cards are easily identified by their gold-bordered backs, which intentionally distinguish them from the standard, playable versions of the cards used in official sanctioned tournaments.

The artwork for this specific Island was originally created by Christopher Rush for the inaugural Magic: The Gathering set. Rush was one of the early luminaries of the game's aesthetic, known for his atmospheric landscapes that established the foundational tone of the mana system. His depiction of the island remains one of the most iconic pieces of early fantasy art in the game, widely celebrated for its clean, serene composition and the stark contrast between the island's terrain and the surrounding ocean.
