Goethes Werke: Hamburger Ausgabe. Autobiographische Schriften ; herausgegeben, mit Nachwort und Anmerkungen versehen von Herbert v. Einem ; textkritisch durchgesehen von Erich Trunz

The Hamburger Ausgabe, or Hamburg Edition, was established in the post-war period between 1948 and 1964 as a monumental effort to provide a reliable, scholarly, and readable version of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works. Initiated by the publisher Christian Wegner and overseen by the eminent scholar Erich Trunz, the series was designed to bridge the gap between purely academic, critical editions and editions intended for the general educated reader. Its success laid in its combination of rigorous text-critical standards and extensive, accessible commentaries that helped contextualize Goethe's immense body of work for a modern German-speaking audience.

This specific volume, focusing on the autobiographical writings, reflects the high editorial standards of the series, with Herbert von Einem serving as the editor for this section. The design of the Hamburger Ausgabe is characterized by its sober, functional elegance, prioritizing legibility and clarity, which became a hallmark of mid-century German academic book design. It remains a standard reference work for Goethe scholars and literature enthusiasts alike, consistently praised for its balance of textual integrity and illuminating annotations that clarify the complex intellectual landscape of Goethe’s life and era.
