Goethes Werke: III. Abteilung 8. Band

This volume belongs to the Weimarer Ausgabe, also known as the Sophien-Ausgabe, the definitive historical-critical edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's works. Commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1885, the project sought to provide a comprehensive and scholarly collection of the author's extensive writings. It was produced under the auspices of the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv, intended to serve as the standard reference for German literary studies for generations to come.

The editorial rigor behind this series defined its design and scholarly reputation. By organizing the work into distinct departments—with the third division focused on scientific writings—the editors aimed to categorize Goethe's polymathic output systematically. The austere, academic presentation reflects the late 19th-century commitment to philological precision, and it remains widely respected by scholars and libraries today as the foundational text for research into the life and intellectual contributions of Germany's most influential literary figure.
