˜Theœ British classical Authors: select specimens of the national literature of England and America

Compiled by Ludwig Herrig in the mid-19th century, this anthology was designed as a comprehensive textbook for German students of the English language. Herrig, a prominent educator and philologist, sought to provide a curated selection of British and American literary specimens that reflected the evolution of national literature. By organizing excerpts ranging from classical writers to contemporary figures, the work served as a bridge between Continental pedagogical practices and the burgeoning interest in Anglo-American literary history.

The design of the collection emphasizes structural clarity, intended to aid non-native speakers in navigating varying prose styles and linguistic nuances. It was received as a standard reference in European academic circles, often reprinted in expanded editions as the canon of English literature grew. The anthology is notable for its deliberate inclusion of American authors, a choice that highlighted the expansion of English-language studies beyond the borders of Britain and into a more global, transatlantic context.
