The complete poetical works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge including poems and versions of poems now published for the first time: Edited with textual and biographical notes by Ernest Hartley Coleridge. In 2 volumes

Published by the Clarendon Press in 1912, this two-volume collection stands as the definitive scholarly edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s verse produced in the early twentieth century. Edited by the poet's grandson, Ernest Hartley Coleridge, the set was the culmination of decades of archival research. Its primary purpose was to consolidate the vast, scattered body of Coleridge’s work, including previously unpublished drafts, variants, and manuscripts that had remained obscured since the poet’s death in 1834.

Ernest Hartley Coleridge approached the project with the rigor of a meticulous textual critic, aiming to present a chronological and authoritative record that rectified the inconsistencies of earlier, less comprehensive anthologies. The work is noted for its extensive biographical introductions and detailed critical apparatus, which provide essential context for the Romantic period's complex literary landscape. Upon its release, the set was received by the academic community as an indispensable resource for scholars of nineteenth-century British literature, establishing a textual standard that remained largely unchallenged for many years.
