The Complete Poetical Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Including Poems and Versions of Poems Now Publ. for the First Time

This collection, edited by Ernest Hartley Coleridge and published in the early 20th century, represents one of the most significant scholarly efforts to consolidate the diverse and often scattered poetic output of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The edition was motivated by a desire to provide a definitive, chronologically ordered text that incorporated previously unpublished variants and verses, reflecting the Victorian and Edwardian preoccupation with complete authorial canonization and rigorous literary preservation.

The editorial design focuses on academic accessibility, providing the reader with both the canonical poems and an extensive apparatus of textual variants and notes. By presenting poems that had never before appeared in print, the collection sought to capture the full spectrum of Coleridge’s creative evolution, from his early experimental drafts to his late-life revisions. It was received by contemporary critics as a vital resource for Romantic studies, serving to stabilize the academic understanding of the poet’s complex, often fragmented legacy.
