Where it came from
The Shanks card from the OP01-120 set, colloquially referred to as an alternate art piece from the One Piece Card Game's inaugural 'Romance Dawn' expansion, was released in late 2022. It represents the high-rarity tier of the game's initial launch, designed to draw collectors into the Bandai TCG ecosystem by showcasing pivotal characters from the series in premium, stylized illustrations that diverge from the standard card art found in base sets.
The artwork for this specific card features a striking, cinematic portrayal of Shanks, designed to capture the gravitas and aura of the Red-Haired Pirate. Illustrated by artists commissioned by Bandai to emphasize the bold, dynamic aesthetic of the One Piece manga, the card was received with immediate enthusiasm by the community. Its design is notable for the signature manga-style line work and the scarcity inherent in the 'Secret Rare' chase mechanic, which helped establish the card as a centerpiece for the game's secondary market.
